Group 4 Report IC Abuja

1. GEOPOLITICAL CONTEXT

  • 8 year is not a long period but much was done
  • Multiteralism growing: US, China, Europe‚Ķ
  • Militarisation, especially pursued by US afer 9-11, is a new development. Someone said that change in the US government will not mean a change in the basic policies of the US government. US as a failure of neoliberalism is a new development. Some said that opposition to EU constitution is a positive dvt.
  • Intolerance, fundamentalism keep growing.
  • Fundamental situations remain the same, with some shifts and nuances. More progressive governements coming into power in Latin America is a positive evolution. Some insisted that Church is becoming more conversative and impacting on rights of conversative values.
  • Climate change is a new area to be discussed.
  • Very different contexts of political situations and situations of movement among the regions.

2. MOVEMENTS

  • Have grown but uneven growth
  • Imbalance between presence of movements in the WSF space and actual strength in some regions (Vzla, Paraguay, Bolivia)

3. WSF: space and action

  • Debate between open space and political positioning is a false debate bc the Charter is clear on this.
  • There should be more adherence to the charterCharter of principles remain smallest common denominator
  • Need in WSF : more actions, more convergences, not form of 1 but many such expressions
  • Open space: no one can control it but does not mean it is a neutral space.

4. Future of the WSF

  • The space must remain open, particularly to the most vulnerable layers of society:peasants etc, who must be heard.
  • Methodology on WSF is key: issue of language (including translation of charter of pcples to the different languages), new and emerging issues must be addressed by methodology like climate change.

5. Periodicity etc>

  • WSF: every two (if not every or three years)
  • GDA: every year or every 2 year (alternance with the WSF)
