[WSF-Discuss] Same struggles for ecuadorian and peruvian indigenous people ?

Hello everyone,

Even if I read each post made to WSFDiscuss list very carefully, I'm
not used to write in it so much. But I wanted to share an information
that seems very interesting and worrying as well.

The crisis in Peru between indigenous people and government about
unfair land laws that opened the way for free forest exploitation by
transnational corporations was one of the hot topics of the past few
months.

And now a similar story seems to begin in Ecuador. The Washington Post
published on its website today (October 1st) an article from Jeanneth
Valdivieso (Associated Press) which is reporting clashes between
police and indigenous people in Ecuador protesting against laws
similar to Peru's one. These clashes are said to have left one
indigenous killed and several wounded from both sides.

Here's the link for the whole article :

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wpdyn/content/article/2009/09/30/AR2009093005385.html?wprss=rss_world/wires

There is something very interesting in this story I think. As usual,
corporations tries to make profit destroying everything without any
conscience on social or environnemental levels (maybe the only green
they see is dollar's one ?). But this time it's not with the
complicity of a right-wing government as in Peru, but with help from a
left-wing-one ! It is effectively very surprising (or more cynically
«interesting») to see President Rafael Correa, the same who spoke with
four other left-wing president at the WSF, giving support to
corporations by making this law and use coercition against indigenous
protesters...

This is only a first analysis and I'm not a specialist of the question
so I will be very glad to hear all the analysis you will make about
that and to have also any further information as they will come to you
(and us)

And one last thing : I apologize for this english-only e-mail but I'm
not fluent enough in Portuguese nor Spanish to write what i said in
these languages (As a french-speaker, English is already a foreign
language for me !)

I hope there will be a good exchange on this ecuadorian question,

Best regards to all,
