MSF 2009 : 17th - 19th April 2009

================================================================

Yes, you already know we're planning an event, but what have we
actually been doing when 2009 is still so far away?

The organisers have been busy applying for grant funding from several
organisations. This meticulous task takes skill, time and foreword
planning, which is a challenging ask for our voluntary time. If you
know of any sources of funding that you think might assist us in
delivering MSF 2009, please drop us a line. Alternatively, if you have
some time and grant writing skills, we'd love to hear from you.

info at melbournesocialforum.org

Regarding the wider event conceptual planning stage. We invite you to
submit your ideas for themes, activities and outcomes that you would
like to see eventuate.

All listings are fully search engine optimised and the site is driven
by an environmentally aware community and hence a lot of targeted
traffic flows through the site which is perfect for businesses that
are also environmentally orientated.

Did you know the Government is proposing an internet censorship
scheme that goes further than any other democracy in the world?

I've just signed a petition to prevent the scheme that will make the
internet up to 87% slower, more expensive, accidentally block up to
one in 12 legitimate sites, will miss the vast majority of
inappropriate content and is very easily sidestepped. The government
of the day may add any 'unwanted' site to a secret blacklist under the
scheme.

Our Government should be doing all in its power to take Australia
into the 21st century economy, and to protect our children. This
proposed internet censorship does neither. Can you join me and take
action on the net today to save the net?

If we want people to behave decently, honestly, ethically, morally
then we have to see these strengths in leadership, and to see these
virtues valued and encouraged in our society, not by denying access to
freedoms enjoyed by other civilized countries. All denying does is
make those who want what others have no interest in, try harder. And
anyway, who in wonderland are these 'leaders' who think they have a

moral mandate to decide what is best for all adults so that
supposedly in turn the children of this country will be protected.
With their questionable view of the world and their assumed power and
control over a part of the world, they are the moral crusaders that
think they will put an end to all evil through legislation. Please
help stop this typical and hysterical knee jerk reaction to anything
that isn't nice and safe and cosy. There has to be a better way to
protect Australia's children than to treat all adults like they were
also children.

Thanks!

ABC Cuts to Radio National

Radio National plans cuts to 10 programs. Specialist programs gone in
2009 will be: The Media Report, The Religion Report, The Sports
Factor, Radio Eye, The Ark, In Conversation, Street Stories and
Perspective. Short Story will rely on repeats from the past. Australia
Talks will be cut back to three days a week. ((Only one program will
be produced. Existing programs will be rescheduled and others extended
to fill gaps. There is a danger that some specialist subjects will be
diluted within generalist programming or lost altogether.((The reason
given by the ABC is the need to extend RN's online content. Without
sufficient funds, that means diverting production resources from
radio. ((. RN's importance is in producing specialist programs that
provide in-depth consideration of issues and events.(. Stephen
Crittendon, The Religion Report presenter, has been stood down from
his job following his revelations and critical comments on-air about
RN's cuts. Stephen is an excellent broadcaster who deserves support.

forums?

Editing - would you like to edit some of the forums on one of Plug in
TVs computers or your own laptop?

Compression - would you like to compress footage to web, and can you

GLOBAL DAY OF CLIMATE ACTION

Concerned citizens around the world will be participating in the
fourth annual Global Day of Climate Action. This important day will be
midway through the annual UN climate conference, taking place this
year in Poznan, Poland. The Climate Crisis Coalition's international
ally, The Global Climate Campaign, is synchronizing demonstrations
around the world in as many places as possible - to call on world
leaders to take urgent action on climate change. As in previous years,
CCC is calling on friends and allies to partake in any way they can.

Craft-in demonstration to be held in Bourke St Mall, Melbourne CBD,
Monday December 8th

The Craft Cartel will be supplying craft materials at the Craft In
and encouraging passers-by to make a crafty gift or card themselves.
The Craft Cartel will also be handing out an alternative gift buying
guide, with plenty of ideas for christmas gifts that don't cost the
planet or our communities.((On Monday December the 8th the Rudd
Government is giving big cash bonuses to pensioners, parents, low
income families and first home buyers. The objective of this handout
is to boost peoples spending in order to keep the economy pumping.
What the Government isn't talking about is the most effective way to
spend this handout to truly support the economy. ((As crafters we
understand the importance of buying handmade. We know that buying a
handmade present means supporting your local community as well as
giving a big finger to mass produced sweat shop crap. We know that
buying handmade is infinitely better for our environment too.((As
crafters we also understand that in times of economic pressure, people
are less likely to spend a few more dollars for the handmade
option.((We want to give the community the message that if they really
want to contribute positively to the Australian economy, they should
forget the plasma tv and Buy Handmade and Buy Local this festive
season.((Did you know?((- For every $100 spent at a locally owned
business $45 goes back into the community and our tax base. For every
$100 spent at a chain store only $14 comes back.(- Small local
businesses are the largest employer in Australia. Every $1million
spent locally equals 14 jobs!(- Non-profit organisations receive 250%
more support from small local businesses than from large businesses.
So if you support local business you support local causes too!(- Local
business are more likely to purchase goods and services from other
local businesses which dramatically reduces transport costs, one of
the biggest causes of climate change.(- Handmade goods are more likely
to include recycled materials which reduces the need for landfills(-
Handmade goods are unique, high quality and set trends rather than
following them!((The Craft Cartel will be supplying craft materials at
the Craft In and encouraging passers-by to make a crafty gift or card
themselves. The Craft Cartel will also be handing out an alternative
gift buying guide, with plenty of ideas for christmas gifts that don't
cost the planet or our communities.((We are looking for more crafters,
designers, makers and handmade retailers to join us on the street to
spread the message of buying handmade. We encourage people to bring
examples of your work and promotional material to spread to people on
the streets. We want people to come talk to passers-by about the
pressures they face trying to earn a living making and selling
handmade goods.((So come join us on the street and spread the word
amongst your communities about buying handmade!

RSVP and spread the word
